Mental alterations in the womb
The report's senior author Tracy Bale, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine working in the Department of Animal Biology and the Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine, claimed that the study proves that a woman's level of stress can have detrimental effects to her child's development when it causes changes to the amount of a certain protein the placenta produces.

"Most everything experienced by a woman during a pregnancy has to interact with the placenta in order to transmit to the fetus," Bale said. "Now we have a marker that appears to signal to the fetus that its mother has experienced stress."

The study illustrated through the use of lab mice that the effects of a mother's stress during pregnancy can impact the neurological health of at least one additional generation when the baby born to the affected mother is male. Schizophrenia, the study claimed, is one of the major disorders that can be caused by an affected fetal growth environment, which males are more susceptible to overall.

Early detection may result

"We want to get to the point where we can predict the occurrence of neurodevelopmental disease," Bale claimed. "If we have a marker for exposure, we can meld that with what we know about the genetic profiles that predispose individuals to these conditions and keep a close eye on children who have increased risks."

The study team believes that links between abnormalities in mouse placentas used for research and human placentas that had carried boys to term provide strong evidence that the experiences of mice during development reflect what a male child biologically goes through. The scientists compared levels of an enzyme found in placentas, O-linked-N-acetylglucosamine transferase (OGT?), which were discovered to impact the appearance of hundreds of genes responsible for an animal's energy expenditure, control of protein production and other operations the body undergoes to create a functioning brain.
