How weight loss can positively impact Nexium users

Chronic heartburn can be a debilitating condition, and recent studies have indicated that the effects of long-term acid reflux can be more serious, such as the development of throat and vocal cord cancers. However, pharmaceuticals such as Nexium can help decrease the worst symptoms of acid reflux, while researchers have unlocked another, more holistic approach to treatment.

HealthDay recently reported that doctors at the University of Kansas School of Medicine have completed a study that revealed weight loss might improve the livelihoods of individuals living with chronic heartburn. According to the news provider, women were found to experience exceptional reductions in the number and intensity of heartburn episodes following adherence to a regimented workout schedule.

The study's authors looked at 200 men and women who were either overweight or obese, and had an average age of 46. The source explained that the individuals weighed around 220 pounds on average, and 38 percent of which were diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease on account of their severe symptoms. Following the loss of roughly 40 pounds, the prevalence of severe symptoms dropped to 18 percent.

What's more, HealthDay explained that many of the patients regained weight following the test, and a high percentage of them started to experience more severe symptoms once again. Though the results were definitive in the eyes of the study's authors, they have yet to understand the specific cause-and-effect mechanism responsible for the improvements following weight loss.

The news provider added that an estimated 60 million Americans experience heartburn symptoms on a monthly basis or more often.

Aside from exercising more and maintaining a healthy weight, Health Magazine recommends eating oatmeal in the morning or as an afternoon snack to decrease symptoms. The source also suggested eating plenty of bananas, salads and ginger to lower the intensity and frequency of heartburn episodes.
