Levaquin belongs to a specific class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. These medicines work by interfering with the process that allows bacteria to survive. Bacteria strands need certain enzymes in order to reproduce in the body. Fluoroquinolones inhibit these enzymes and cause bacteria to stop replicating and eventually die out. When taken as directed, Levaquin can eliminate the offending bacteria in the body, playing a central role in treating the infection.
Levaquin is only effective when it is taken as prescribed, for the time that is directed by the doctor. Patients who order Levaquin but stop their treatment program too early may experience a recurrence of their symptoms, or develop a stronger form of the bacteria that cannot be treated with antibiotics.
Levaquin’s only active ingredient is levofloxacin, but the medicine also contains several inactive ingredients that relate to its shape and appearance. The inactive ingredients in the liquid version include hypromellose, titanium dioxide, and polyethylene glycol. Oral Levaquin tablets also include inactive ingredients such as red iron oxide and synthetic yellow iron oxide.
The side effects of Levaquin can range from mild to severe, depending on how each patient reacts to the medication. Some of the typical side effects include mild reactions such as upset stomach, feelings of dizziness, and trouble sleeping. Serious reactions, however, may include extreme or unexpected joint pain, trouble urinating, loose or watery stools, and fever.
In rare cases, Levaquin may produce an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction to any of Levaquin’s ingredients include hives or rash on the skin, swelling of the face, or a stinging feeling in the eyes.
Levaquin may cause interactions when taken with other medications such as insulin, blood thinners, steroids, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Patients are encouraged to discuss all current medications with their doctors before beginning treatment with Levaquin.
