Prandin Information

The active ingredient in Prandin tablets is an anti-diabetic medicine called Repaglinide, which helps to control blood sugar levels in “non-insulin dependent” diabetes, also known as Type 2 diabetes. In diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce sufficient quantities of insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating the level of sugar the blood. In Type 2 diabetes, the cells in the body resist the effects of what little insulin is available in the circulation. Normally, the hormone makes these cells remove excess sugar from the blood, which means that, in this form of diabetes, it tends to reach dangerously high levels.

How does Prandin work?

The Repaglinide in Prandin acts on pancreatic cells called “beta cells”, causing them to produce more insulin. Although a physician should be consulted to ensure that this is the most effective treatment for any one individual’s condition, people who buy Prandin (Repaglinide) usually take it before meals so that insulin production is enhanced while food is consumed; repaglinide usually stimulates the pancreas half an hour after being swallowed. The sugars released into the blood while the food enters the body are thereby safely regulated.

Prandin Dosage

The medication is sometimes used in conjunction with another antidiabetic drug called metformin, which regulates blood sugar levels between meals, but this is not always necessary. When consumers buy generic Prandin (Repaglinide), they will find that it is available in three doses, 0.5 mg per pill, 1 mg per pill and 2 mg per pill. All doses are available in packs of 90 pills, costing $47.00 per pack; 180 pills, costing $89.00 per pack and 270 pills, costing $124.00 per pack.

Prandin Side effects

For patients who take Prandin in combination with metformin, care should be taken to monitor blood sugar levels regularly, as the two medicines can cause blood sugar levels to drop too far, a condition called hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include unusual tiredness, confusion, loss of concentration, headache, nausea, cold pale skin, cold sweats, anxiousness and tremor. The risk of hypoglycemia also increases for people taking Prandin if they exercise vigorously or consume alcohol, especially, in the latter case, if unaccompanied by food. People using Prandin should take great care to avoid hypoglycemic attacks when they are driving or operating machinery.

Precautions before taking Prandin

Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should not take Prandin, as it can cross the placenta or enter into breast milk and interfere with the baby’s blood sugar regulation. Also, there has been no research into the safety of Prandin in children under the age of 18 years or in elderly adults above the age of 75. It has also not been studied in people who have impaired liver function. The medication is therefore not considered suitable for anyone falling into these groups.
