Osteoporosis is a common disease, but perhaps some of us are still wondering, what is osteoporosis and how can you treat it? It’s a disease that deteriorates and weakens the bones, leading to a high chance of fractures. Osteoporosis develops when the body becomes unable to generate new bone while simultaneously is reabsorbing the calcium and phosphate from old bones. It affects 200 million women worldwide, and is estimated that hip fractures will increase exponentially by 2050: with a 310% increase among men, and a 240% rise among women. The drug Raloxifene (Evista) has been found to be very effective in preventing and treating osteoporosis. Raloxifene is an FDA-approved SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator) that is developed for women, particularly postmenopausal women who have lowered estrogen levels and bone density. Raloxifene is able to increase bone density and strength by acting as estrogen and providing all the benefits of estrogen without bringing the negative side effects of the hormone. In fact, Raloxifene can reduce the chances of breast cancer by 50%.

Osteoporosis Treatment

Raloxifene is a top medication for osteoporosis treatment. You can maximize the benefits of Raloxifene and strengthen bones by ensuring a daily intake of 1200 mg of calcium and 800 mg of vitamin D3, and making lifestyle choices as well. Choosing a healthy diet and an exercise routine that includes weight-bearing elements, and avoiding smoking and alcohol are all helpful lifestyle factors. Using Raloxifene for osteoporosis treatment may have side effects. Common minor effects can include hot flashes, joint pain, sweating, and leg cramps. Let your doctor know if you take other medications with estrogen, are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Share/Bookmark
